Create an Idea Bank or Content Calendar

Now, if you ask me what are the best blog writing techniques, I would say having a bunch of ideas for your blog is the crucial step.

— This habit helps you write and maintain your blog successfully and consistently. I like to follow this and have my ideas ready for at least two months.

Thus, I need not worry about what to post next or which topic my next article should contain. As a result, it saves my time and energy.

In my previous article, I discussed a process I follow to create a content calendar. Moreover, you can head over to that particular section to get detailed information.

Blog Writing Tips (from my knowledge)

Whenever I sit down to write an article and publish it, I follow simple steps from the draft to publishing. However, these steps are in a sequence that anyone can follow.

Moreover, it will give you an idea of what to do after writing your first draft. In the next section, I will share some of the best blog writing tips for beginners.

Also, if you are still worried about “Will AI replace blogging?” Stay with me until the end to learn the process I use in my blogging journey. By following them, you will feel confident while publishing your content, even if you have no prior experience.

Come, let me tell you what they are.

Tip 1: Brainstorming Ideas for Consistency

As I said above, creating a content calendar is a crucial step. The same begins with writing down your ideas. I suggest you set aside a day or two in a month for this purpose.

Firstly, write your thoughts on finding a blogging niche or ideas regarding your niche if you have one already. Think of the topics you want to write about, your target audience’s problems, and how you can solve them with your blog.

I dedicate 30 minutes to 1 hour only to write down the ideas I get without any judgment or editing. In addition to this, you can note the ideas whenever you get any.

There is no rule that you will get ideas only in the hour we have set up for you to write. Even the same happens to me. That hour is to write your heart out. But you need to observe and note down when an idea pops up in your head.

As a result, all your rough ideas will be in a single place, and continue this step. Hence, store this as an idea bank or a Work In Progress ideas folder.

With its help, you can refer to the topics anytime and modify them accordingly.

Tip 2: Collect Ideas with Competitor Research

Previously, I have talked about the importance of having your idea bank, right? And there is another step that I follow after brainstorming my ideas.

That is, I do my competitor research for more ideas. In this step, you can analyze what your competitors in your niche are already doing. What is working for them, what is not, and what do your audiences want?

Also, you can identify what they can do to better their content or topics. Similarly, brainstorming our ideas is as important as researching competitors and finding what they write about instead of worrying about how to write a blog.

See if the topics are relevant to your niche and are suitable you may collect that idea. Later, observe what keywords they use and remember not to copy word for word to make your article plagiarism-free.

— I suggest you pick the idea from your competitor and improve it as per your requirement. By doing this consistently, you will never run out of ideas and understand what your competitors are doing.

Great, now it is time to analyze the ideas collected. Later, you research for keywords and check their volume.

Not every idea has the scope to reach a wider audience, right? There may be a few that people are not searching at all.

Hence, there is a lack of requirements. I feel there is no point in writing that article as your main topic.

Moreover, consider that you want a particular idea that makes sense and that you want to add it to your blog without any requirement. You can get ranked for it, but you should write it as a cluster to your main idea and link to it.

Tip 3: Craft a Curious and Clickable Headline

After deciding your topic, the next crucial part is to write a headline for your article. Now, your headline will become your hook, and decide whether your blog viewer will become your reader.

The practice I follow is I write my headline at the end after finishing my whole draft. By this, I will get an idea of my article and can craft a better headline covering the full article.

And sometimes, I craft a testing headline before writing the article. As a result, I will get an idea of what this article is and edit it later.

You can follow any of these and try what works best for you. You may think the headline is the most important, but what is the most popular blog format for headlines?

Let me give you a gist of it. There are many headline types which you can use. Like:

  • Use Numbers
  • Ask a question
  • How-to post
  • Beginner’s guide
  • Use statistics
  • Use your opinion
  • Targeting specific audience

Whatever you choose, the main goal is to make your readers curious enough to click on your post and read. Also, it should contain information about what your article is about.

Take my previous article headline as an example. That was about starting a blog and guiding beginners regarding the same.

I used the headline “Starting a blog in 2024: A step-step guide for beginners”.

However, this comes under targeting a specific audience and using numbers

With this, a reader will know what this post is about. At the same time, a beginner will click and read this post. Because they might be a beginner and want more information about starting a blog.

Tip 4: Prepare a Full Outline of Your Article

Once you write your headline, you should outline your whole article before writing. This practice helps me a lot and saves me time.

Firstly, I write every heading I want to use in my article and form it as a structure, main heading – subheading, etc.

Secondly, I write 2 to 3 lines I want to cover under that heading as a gist. Yes, it helps you to write in sequential order so you will know better what is coming next after this heading.

Also, your article will have a structure so you will not get lost between writing and your readers. Organizing your content wastes a lot of time. Hence, do some research first and write later.

Tip 5: Write a Banging Intro to Keep your Readers Hooked

Each part of our article is as important as the headline and outline. Not only those, but the next part is also crucial.

I hope the previous section has helped you to write a nice headline. But what is the use if your sequential statements are not as curious as your heading?

There comes the introduction part. For any article or content, the introduction is a must. I usually introduce my topic in a few sentences, including what the article contains and what my readers expect from the whole post.

How to write a blog post introduction? Try to have your formula and write similarly so that you don’t need to ask how to get rid of writer’s block.

Example: introduce your topic -> tell what it will contain -> who this is -> what problem you can solve with your post. Etc.

Tip 6: Maintain a Flow Throughout Your Post

So, your complete article is a sequential process. As a result, after the headline and introduction, every part should be readable and clickable.

Then you think about “Why your readers should read the whole article? What should take them to read the next section?”

Asking myself this question while I write every part/heading helps me to show my personality and engage my readers more. And it allows me to maintain a flow throughout my post.

The way that works for me is:

  • link my current heading with previous ones
  • treat my post like a conversation with my readers
  • share my own stories and personal experiences
  • ask relevant questions
  • appreciate my readers

Finally, this adds a more personalized touch and shows my voice throughout the post. Also, it keeps my readers hooked till the end.

Bonus tip: Treat every line or heading as a hook while writing.

Tip 7: Include Strong CTA at the End

Wow, you have reached the end of writing your post. But wait! You need to create the most exciting part, which is the call to action.

Yes, you read it right. Finally, you wrote a fantastic article. Now think of “what action you want your readers to take after reading your article?”

Some ways I like to think are:

  • to feel motivated
  • to find a solution to their problem
  • to read my other articles
  • to take an action related to the post
  • to promote my business and so on

As a result, by thinking this way, I’d be able to write better call-to-action for my readers.

For example, this post is about “how to write a blog”. I try to find ways to encourage my audience to start writing a blog, even though they are beginners.

Though it is direct, try to put it diplomatically and engagingly so that your readers cannot resist themselves from taking a particular action.

Further, I will move to the next crucial steps in the next sections that are better to follow once you write your post.

Tip 8: Proofreading and Editing for Search Engines

I will share my personal experience here. Firstly, I finish writing my draft and make sure not to edit while I write. Because it disturbs my flow, I cannot focus more on getting fresh ideas.

— I do not wait for one section of my post to be perfect and move to the next. Specifically, it wastes my crucial time in editing only.

Next, keeping my draft handy, I start my first editing. Yes, you read it right, initial edit. Do not edit your rough draft ever. Make a copy of your draft, and you can do as many editing sessions as you like.

For this, first, you need to proofread your entire article once with a fresh mind. Take a break after you write and before you start editing.

With this, your perspective will change, and you get fresh thoughts while you sit for editing. As per your preference, you can finish it in one edit. If not, keep your first edit saved and then only make a second edit.

As a result, you will not lose your writing drafts and edits until you reach your final edit. Remember this while you edit:

“Cut the unnecessary fluff mercilessly.”

Also, it is so important to edit your blog with relevant keywords without stuffing. Hence, this is crucial for search engines to understand and rank our blog.

Tip 9: Add Relevant Images and Statistics

After your editing is over, choose images for your article. The image can make our posts more realistic and personalized and take our blog to the next level.

Hence, it is essential to use relevant images in the article whenever needed. Initially, I did not focus on creating multiple images for my posts.

Later, once I became comfortable writing better, I started focusing on the design part more. Moreover, with images you can convey a lot of information that you could not cover with your content.

To do this, you can create your own images. If not try to use free/paid resources from online based on your article’s context. But remember to give credit to the image owner if you are using online resources.

I prefer using Canva to create images on my own first. Also, I do research and take inspiration online.

Lastly, it is time to research if you are showing any statistics prepare or download relevant reports to share in your post. As a result, this gives solid proof to your readers for the numbers you spoke about stats.

Tip 10: Formatting Your Post in an Eye-Appealing Way

Finally, let us format our post beautifully. This can be done only if you have followed all the steps above and have your content and design ready.

This step is my favorite, and I like to format it in a way that:

  • Highlights what is more important
  • Sparks curiosity and interest
  • Readers can quickly skim through

No one prefers reading huge paragraphs right? I do not choose the same, and neither you, I guess. Hence, you cannot ignore formatting. Think from your reader’s point of view while editing.

You can take my post as an example and identify the different highlighters or formats I used here.

There are so many ways you can make an eye-catching and appealing post. You can use:

  1. Bullet points
  2. Highlighters
  3. Placing images where needed
  4. Bold, Italic texts
  5. Create a custom background for your text and many more.

Once you format it, check its preview before finalizing. Go through the complete post, see, and then understand. Then, you can change your formatting if more is needed or cut out any.

With this, we have understood how to write a blog for beginners or at any stage you are. Wait, it is not over yet. I have an essential bonus tip for you in the next section.

BONUS TIP

Tip 11: Optimize Your Post for Mobile Users

We all love a device and keep it with us handy always. Guess what is it? It is our Smartphones. Yeah, you got it right.

There is no rule that everyone who reads our blog will check it from desktop only right?

Most of our blogs are viewed and read from mobile devices only. Hence, it is necessary to optimize it for mobiles.

In the way we formatted our post in the previous section, you need to optimize it now. Remember, I told you to preview before you finalize your format?

While you are doing that, check the preview for the mobile view also. Because, when you are formatting for desktops/laptops, text may be there in 2-3 lines only.

But when it comes to mobiles, it appears as a bulk of text like a huge para. We do not want that for our mobile readers.

Hence break down any large texts separately after you have previewed them for mobiles. Continue this process till you are satisfied.
